KHUTBAH FROM MAKKAH - YEAR 2004 (1424-1425 A.H.)

Prohibition of Shedding protected Blood

Shaykh Abdullah As-Subayyil [(Jumada Al-Awwal 7, 1425 (June 25, 2004)]

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah for He is the One Who knows what you do publicly and secretly. Be dutiful to Him by doing acts of righteousness and abstaining from forbidden things.

Brethren in faith! Allaah attached great importance to rights of humans and strongly prohibits attacking their lives, wealth and honours. During his farewell pilgrimage, the Messenger of Allaah said, “Your blood, your properties, and your honour are sacred to one another like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this (sacred) town (Makkah) of yours, in this month of yours. And you shall meet your Lord and He will ask you of your deeds. Beware! Do not renegade (as) disbelievers after me by striking the necks (cutting the throats) of one another.”

If the greatest crime after ascribing partners to Allaah is killing a protected soul, this is then tantamount to causing mischief in the land and a heinous crime. Allaah says,

“If anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land - it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind.”

(Al-Maaidah 5:32)

Allaah also threatens whoever kills a Muslim when He says,

“And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell to abide therein; and the Wrath and the Curse of Allaah are upon him, and a great punishment is prepared for him.”

(An-Nisaa 4:93)

The Messenger of Allaah said, “If all the inhabitants of the heavens and the hearts join hands to kill a Muslim, Allaah will cast all of them to Hell on their faces.”

He also said, “Whoever helps in killing a Muslim even with half a word, he will come on the Day of Resurrection while the following expression is written on his forehead: ‘despaired of Allaah’s mercy.’”

Dear Muslims! Where are the senses of those who claim to be Muslims? Where is their religion and their fear of Allaah? Why this indifference about killing and shedding blood? Have matters of blood and other people’s lives become so insignificance in these men’s eyes that they can issue to one another verdicts that other people’s blood is violable? The Messenger of Allaah has told us a story that should make us fear Allaah. He said, “There will be killings at the threshold of the Hour. It is not that you will kill the polytheists. It is rather some of you that will kill some until a man will kill his neighbour, his brother, his uncle and his cousin.” The companions asked, “And our hearts will remain with us on that day O Allaah’s Messenger?” He responded, “The hearts of the people of that time shall be removed and it shall remain useless people who will think that they are upon something and they are not upon anything.”

Dear brethren! How can someone advance to commit a murder while knowing that it is a heinous crime and that he will be made to face the murdered on the Day of Resurrection? Allaah’s Messenger said, “The murdered will hold on to the murderer on the Day of Resurrection with his jugular veins dripping in blood and he will say: ‘O my Lord, ask this [man] why he killed me?’”

Can’t the killer remember the number of the souls he has hurt? Parents that he has caused great pains and the children he has turned to orphans? Ibn ‘Umar said, “One of the greatest quagmires from which there is no way out for whoever plunged themselves in them is killing an inviolable soul.”

Fellow Muslims! Islaam is stern on killing innocent souls. It does not only protect the life of the Muslim; it also protects the life of non-Muslim. It forbids that a non-Muslim who is under the protection of the Muslim state should be harmed; for the Muslims are equal and the guarantee of safety granted by the humblest Muslim should be respected by all Muslims. The Prophet said, “Whoever kills a no-Muslim who is under the protection of a Muslim state shall not perceive the fragrance of Paradise and its fragrance is perceived from a journey of forty years.” (Al-Bukhaaree)

Brethren in faith! What is this state of drunkenness in which those who terrorise the Muslims and deviate from their path are living? Can they reflect on what they are doing? They are accusing the scholars and the society with error and they claim that it is only they who perform the duty of promoting virtues and forbidding vices at a time that majority of the Muslims are in the state of submissiveness to the enemy. This leads them to shedding blood and frightening people thinking that they are helping the cause of Islaam and the truth. They so much transgressed that they declared some Muslims as infidels and take that as an excuse to kill and destroy.

Dear Muslims! This is the affliction from which the Prophet strongly warned us, which his companions carefully kept away from and which the scholars clearly explained to us. The Prophet said, “I command you to fear Allaah and to listen and obey even if an Abyssinian slave is made a ruler over you. For whoever among you lives longer after me shall witness many differences. Hold fast unto my Sunnah and the path of the guiding and righteously guided successors who will come after me. Adhere to this tenaciously and beware of innovation for every innovation is heresy and every heresy is misguidance.

The first crisis emerged during the time of the companions. Some people declared some companions of the Prophet and their followers as infidels and they fought them and shed their blood. Allaah’s Messenger gave us a characteristic of misguided people when he said, “They will go out killing Muslims and sparing the worshippers of idols.”

In another hadeeth reported by Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim, there was a man with sunken eyes, raised cheek bones, raised forehead, a thick beard, a shaven head and a waist sheet that was tucked up and he said, "O Allah's Messenger! Be afraid of Allaah." The Prophet said, "Woe to you! Am I not of all the people of the earth the most entitled to fear Allaah?" Then that man went away. Khaalid bin Al-Waleed said, "O Allah's Messenger! Shall I chop his neck off?" The Prophet said, "No, for he may offer prayers." Khaalid said, "Numerous are those who offer prayers and say by their tongues (i.e. mouths) what is not in their hearts." Allaah's Messenger said, "I have not been ordered (by Allaah) to search the hearts of the people or cut open their bellies.”

Fellow Muslims! Fear Allaah as He should be feared. Know that fear of Allaah is the most formidable fortress against crises and evils, and it is the brightest light that leads to the straight path.

Dear Muslims! One of the Prophet’s instructions to his followers is to obey the rulers, help them to uphold the truth and to remind them with gentleness, love and sincerity. He said, “He who obeys me obeys Allaah and he who disobeys me disobeys Allaah. He who obeys the ruler obeys me and he who disobeys the ruler disobeys me. The ruler is only a shield with which the protection is sought.”

In the hadeeth reported by Muslim, the famous companion of the Prophet said, “We took the oath of allegiance to Allaah’s Messenger. Among the injunctions he made binding upon us was: Listening and obedience (to the leader) in our pleasure and displeasure, in our adversity and prosperity, even when somebody is given preference over us.”
