Qualities of the Muslim Society
Shaykh Husayn Al Ash-Shaykh [(Rabee'uth Thaanee 22, 1425 (June
11, 2004)]

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the
worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Messenger, his household and companions.
Dear brethren! The Muslims are being faced with waves of crises and elements of
dissention and calamities. The enemies are striving to sow discord among them.
The exert all efforts create enmity in the Muslim societies and spread hatred
among their youths.
This situation has made the Muslims in greater need of adhering to the only path
that can purify their hearts and through which love and affection can be spread
in their societies.
Yes, the Muslims are in dire need of going back to the greatest moral concepts
that entail the highest principles of love, affection and lofty traits.
This school is that of Islaam that keenly seeks to establish causes of love and
affection and brotherhood among Muslims. Allaah says,
“The believers are nothing else than brothers.”
(Al-Hujuraat 49:10)
The Messenger of Allaah said, “O servants of Allaah, be brothers [in Islaamic
religion].”
It
is these noble fundamentals and excellent virtues that can lead the Ummah to all
that is good, achieve for them all that is beneficial. These principles are the
foundations of their societies, the source of happiness for them in this worldly
life and the only means of achieving their interests. The wise men said, “If a
people love one another, they will remain connected, if they are connected they
will cooperate, if they cooperate they will be knowledgeable, if they are
knowledgeable they will live a constructive life and if they live a constructive
life they will be blessed.”
It is because of this that Allaah says about the best generation and the
greatest age in terms of righteousness and prosperity: the time of the Ansaar
and the Muhaajiroon,
“And (it is also for) those who, before them, had homes
(in Al-Madinah) and had adopted the Faith, love those who emigrate to them, and
have no jealousy in their breasts for that which they have been given, and give
them (emigrants) preference over themselves even though they were in need of
that.”
(Al-Hashr 59:9)
It is also in the light of this that the Prophet issue his everlasting message
to this Ummah when he said, "Do not hate one another, and do not be jealous of
one another, and do not desert each other, and O, Allaah's worshipers! Be
brothers. The Muslim is a brother of his fellow Muslim; he should not wrong him,
disappoint him or look down upon him. The life, property and honour of a Muslim
are inviolable for his fellow Muslim.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)
Brethren in faith! It is in the shade of this great principle that every Muslim
should live his life. He should remain in contact with his brethren through the
greatest and the most formidable link. Allaah’s Messenger said, “The Muslims are
to each other, like a structure whose parts support one another.” (Al-Bukhaaree
and Muslim)
Dear brethren! Each individual Muslim should live under the shade of the
guidance of the best of all mankind. Each Muslim should possess the excellent
qualities that this noble Prophet taught. He should live in his society while
loving for his brethren what he loves for himself and hating for him what he
hates for himself. The Prophet said, “None of you [truly] believes until he
loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)
Allaah’s Messenger also said, “This Ummah of yours has its days of peace and
(security) in the beginning of its career, and in the last phase of its
existence it will be afflicted with trials and with things disagreeable to you.
(In this phase), there will be tremendous trials one after the other, each
making the previous one dwindle into insignificance. When they would be
afflicted with a trial, the believer would say: This is going to bring about my
destruction. When at (the trial) is over, they would be afflicted with another
trial, and the believer would say: This surely is going to be my end. Whoever
wishes to be delivered from the fire and enter the garden should die with faith
in Allah and the Last Day and should treat the people as he wishes to be treated
by them.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)
The above is a Prophetic rule that entails all excellent and beautiful meanings.
It is a rule issued by the most excellent of all mankind in conduct and the most
perfect of them in righteousness. This rule demands love, brotherhood,
compassion, coexistence, and altruism, helping others to alleviate their
difficulties and meeting people’s needs. The Messenger of Allaah said,
describing the typical Muslim society, “The similitude of believers in regard to
their mutual love, affection and mutual fellow feeling is like that of one body;
when any limb of it aches, the whole body shares the sleeplessness and fever
with it.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)
He also said, “He who meets the need of his brother, Allaah would meet his
needs, and he who relieves a Muslim from hardship Allaah would relieve him from
the hardships to which he would be put on the Day of Resurrection, and he who
did not expose (the follies of a Muslim) Allah would conceal his follies on the
Day of Resurrection.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)
Fellow Muslims! There is also a Prophetic rule that forbids jealousy, and mutual
hatred among Muslims, and that prohibits harming Muslims. Allaah says,
“And those who annoy believing men and women
undeservedly, they bear (on themselves) the crime of slander and plain sin.”
(Al-Ahzaab 33:58)
The Messenger of Allaah said, “Do not be envious of one another, and nurse no
malice, and nurse no aversion and hostility against one another. O servants of
Allaah, be brothers. The Muslim is the brother of his fellow Muslims. He should
not wrong him, nor scorn him nor forsake him. It is enough a sin that a Muslim
should look down upon his Muslim brother. The life, property and honour of a
Muslim are inviolable for his fellow Muslim.” (Muslim)
The Prophet also said, “There should no harming nor reciprocation of harm.”
Fellow Muslims! These are the Islaamic values and fundamentals upon which the
Muslim societies should be built. They are fundamentals that wage war against
violating the security of the society and harming people. They are principles
that fight corruption of all kinds.
Let each Muslim; therefore, adhere to these lofty meanings and noble teachings.
Let him love his fellow Muslims and let him be loved and let him be
compassionate. It is then that he can live the pleasant and satisfying life.
Allaah says,
“The believers, men and women, are supporters, of one
another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma'rűf (i.e. Islaamic Monotheism and all
that Islaam orders one to do), and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e.
polytheism and disbelief of all kinds, and all that Islaam has forbidden); they
perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât) and give the Zakât, and obey Allaah and His
Messenger. Allaah will have His Mercy on them. Surely Allaah is All-Mighty,
All-Wise.”
(At-Tawbah 9:71)
The Messenger of Allaah said, “You will not enter Paradise until you have
believed, and you cannot be [true] believers until you love one another. Shall I
tell of something if you do it you will love one another? Spread salaam in your
midst.” (Muslim)
Brethren in Islaam! The enemies spare no effort to create hatred and enmity
among the Muslims. It is therefore obligatory upon the Muslims to remain
steadfast on the teachings of this religion. Let them adhere to the blessed
instructions that Islaam give.
The fact that the Muslim inhabitants of this country, the land of the two Sacred
Cities, are living a blessed and prosperous life has made them an object of envy
in the eyes of the enemies. It is therefore incumbent that all inhabitants of
this country should join hands in following the Sunnah. They should cooperate in
righteousness and piety, and they should join hands with the leaders and
scholars in achieving good for the society. They should shun all causes of
rancour and discord, so that people may be safe as regards their religion and
worldly affairs and live in security, peace, stability and prosperity.
